Metropolitan Atlanta Exceeds 4,000,000 Population:
More than 150,000 Above Expected
The 20 county Atlanta metropolitan statistical area (MSA) reached a population of 4.112 million according to the 2000 US Census. In 1999
the US Census Bureau had estimated the metropolitan population at 3.857 million, suggesting that the population count exceeded expectations
by at least 150,000 (assumes continuation of the 1990-1999 estimated growth rate to 2000). Metropolitan Atlanta has grown 39 percent
from the 1990 figure of 2.960 million and is expected to be the 11th largest metropolitan area in the nation when final census figures are
released for all areas. During the 1990s, metropolitan Atlanta moved ahead of metropolitan Miami-Fort Lauderdale and metropolitan Seattle.
