Mumbai & Sao Paulo Now
4th & 5th Largest World Municipalities

Mumbai (Bombay) has emerged as the largest non-Chinese municipality in the world as a result of data recently released from the 2001 Census of India. The municipality now has a population of 11.914 million, up 20 percent from the 1991 census figure of 9.926 million. Central Mumbai, roughly corresponding to the pre-1958 borders of the city gained approximately five percent, to 3.327 million, reversing a loss in the 1981-1991 period. Only the Chinese municipalities of Chongquing, Shanghai and Beijing are larger than Mumbai.

Brazil's 2000 census shows the Sao Paulo municipality at 10.406 million, which places it above Seoul as the world's fifth largest municipality.
