New York Sets Population Record in 2000 Census
The city of New York broke its US municipality population record in the 2000 United States census, reaching 8,008,000 residents. This is 112,000 above the previous record set by New York in the 1970 Census (7,896,000). From 1970 to 1980, New York lost 824,000 residents, by far the largest
loss ever sustained over a 10 year period by a US city. The 2000 figure was 580,000 higher than the Census Bureau estimate for 1999,
representing an estimation error of more than seven percent.
Since 1990, New York gained 685,000, sure to be the largest gain of any city during the period. This is the largest gain for the city since
the 1920 to 1930 period, when 1,309,000 residents were added (New York's 1900 to 1910 gain of 1,330,000 is the highest in US history). New York last
led the nation in population increase in the 1930 to 1940 decade.
New York remains more than twice as large as second ranked Los Angeles. Moreover, New York's rate of population growth exceeded that of Los
Angeles for the first time since the 1860 to 1870 census period.
