Portland: Density Profile: Most Similar to San Antonio, Virginia Beach, Seattle, Houston & Columbus
Portland, whose urban containment (so-called smart growth) policies have been touted for some years as having produced a more compact urban area, had a 1990 population profile most closely resembling sprawling San Antonio, Virginia Beach Norfolk, Seattle, Houston and Columbus. Each of these urbanized areas had average population densities by land area deciles within 10 percent of Portland.
The urbanized areas most unlike Portland included much more dense Los Angeles, New York, Miami and San Jose and much less dense Nashville, Charlotte and Greensboro-Winston Salem-High Point.
