San Francisco Growth
Exceeds LA for First Time in 130 Years

Data released today by the US Census Bureau indicates that San Francisco has edged upward in population to 776,773 in 2000, up 7.3 percent from the 723,959 figure in 1990. This is a new peak for San Francisco, which reached 775,000 in 1950. the 7.3 percentage increase is greater than that of Los Angeles at 6.0 percent, the first time San Francisco has exceeded the Los Angeles rate of growth since the 1860 to 1870 census period

San Francisco joins Miami and Vancouver as one of only three major central cities in the developed world that have not annexed significant new territory or developed major greenfield lands and are at their population peak.
