  NOTES ON URBANIZED AREAS

Urbanized areas are (generally) areas that are developed. Urbanized areas are designated and defined by the US Census Bureau as a part of the decennial census (the next to be completed in 2000, with results to be released in 2001 and 2002). Urbanized areas are different from metropolitan areas ( CMSA's and MSA's) by virtue of the fact that they exclude rural areas. Outside New England, metropolitan areas are based upon county boundaries and as a result contain considerable rural land. As a result, metropolitan areas are of very limited value for analyzing urban development and population density.

The terms "urbanized area," "central places" and "urban fringe" are used by the US Census Bureau.

Interim urbanized area data is produce annually by the Federal Highway Administration. This data, however, is subject to significant variations and is often not revised for some years. As a result the FHWA data is not considered reliable for detailed analysis.
