Appointed to 3 terms on the Los Angeles County
Transportation Commission by Mayor Tom Bradley (1977-1985). Served as the only
member of the Commission not an elected official (all other members were either
county supervisors [county commissioners] city council members or mayors). The
Commission oversaw public transit and highways in the nation's largest county
(9 million residents), having been established by state legislation in 1977
(responsibilities similar to that of the Metropolitan Transit Authority in New
York or the Regional Transit Authority in Chicago, plus oversight of highways).
